avocado sliced 263x164 Avocados: Deemed a Perfect Food Due to Countless BenefitsAvocados have been called the perfect food by some, and this title doesn’t come simply from its role as the primary ingredient in guacamole. No, the fruit is actually called this because of its range of health benefits—credited with everything from helping brain function, to encouraging weight loss, and preventing heart disease. Whether you’re already enjoying avocados on a regular basis or if you still need a bit of convincing, the avocado comes with a wealth of swaying perks.

Avocados: Countless Health Benefits

Firstly, people who eat avocados are healthier than people who don’t. No, really. As I reported just a few weeks ago, a recent study found that people who eat avocados on a regular basis have lower BMIs, lower waist circumference, lower intake of added sugar, higher nutrient intakes, and higher levels of “good” cholesterol.

Recently, studies on the benefits of avocados have been flooding nutritional journals, in part because the Hass Avocado Board has been funding more and more research to bolster their avocado campaign. And while we need to be cautious with studies funded by those with a financial interest in their outcome, some of their findings have merely echoed what’s been said before in past research.

One such study shows that eating a hamburger with one-half of an avocado led to a the inhibition of Interleukin-6 (IL-6) production. IL-6 is an inflammatory compound  that is believed to play a role in increased risk of heart disease. In addition, when comparing study subjects who ate their burger with avocado with those who only ate the burger plain, researchers found a lesser effect on reduced blood flow. In other words, the avocado may work to lessen the potentially negative vascular effects of eating beef.

Another study, this one from Japan, indicated that in addition to anti-inflammatory benefits, avocados could help protect against liver damage. Avocado-eating rats were far less susceptible to chemically-induced liver damage when compared to those who didn’t eat avocados.

The beneficial nutrients in avocados are many, but a few of them are: monounsaturated fats, folate, lutein, oleic acid, potassium, and B-vitamins.

The easiest way to reap the many benefits of these perfect fruits is to simply eat them raw. Have a half for a midday snack or alongside some soup. Dice an avocado in your salad or slice it onto a sandwich. This is also a fruit that you don’t need to be concerned about too much due to pesticide exposure, as avocados have tough skin that protects the inner fruit from pesticide exposure. The fruit made the list of the Environmental Working Group’s ‘Clean Fifteen’.

Place the browned chops in the bottom of large baking dish. Place the remaining olive oil in the skillet and allow to heat up again. Stir in the onion and celery. Cook 5 minutes or until just tender. Stir in the apples and continue cooking an additional 5 minutes. Remove the skillet from the heat and set off to the side. Stir in the bread pieces and parsley. Spread the top side of each pork chop with the Dijon mustard. Place a spoonful of the bread mixture on top of the mustard being sure to pat it down to cover the entire pork chop. Place the oven temperature on 350 degrees and allow the oven to heat. Bake the chops 25 minutes or until the chops are no longer pink inside and the stuff has turned a nice golden brown.

Relapsing MS patients more satisfied with Novartis oral drug Gilenya® than standard injectable therapies, according to new study results at CMSC

Relapsing MS patients more satisfied with Novartis oral drug Gilenya® than standard injectable therapies, according to new study results at CMSC

-- In one of the largest studies of its kind, overall patient treatment satisfaction with once-daily Gilenya exceeded 80 on a 100-point TSQM scale1

EAST HANOVER, N.J., May 30, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- People with relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS) reported greater treatment satisfaction after starting the oral treatment Gilenya® (fingolimod) vs. switching to, or staying on, injectable interferon beta or glatiramer acetate, according to new study data presented at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers (CMSC) in Orlando, Fla.1

The US phase IV randomized, multi-center, open-label study, called EPOC (Evaluate Patient OutComes), evaluated treatment satisfaction among more than 1,000 patients.1,2 The study compared Gilenya to interferon beta or glatiramer acetate using a 100-point scale based on the Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication (TSQM),1 a validated tool that measures patient satisfaction with medical treatments.3 A higher TSQM score indicates higher satisfaction.

At six months, adjusted mean treatment global satisfaction subscale scores (a measure of the overall level of satisfaction with a medication that patients are taking) were 80.4 for Gilenya vs. 61.1 for the injectable disease modifying therapies (DMTs), an increase from baseline by 20.4 vs. 2.9, respectively.1 The mean difference between the two scores was a statistically significant 17.5 (p<0.001).1

"Patient satisfaction is critical for the management of chronic conditions like MS," said Christopher LaGanke , MD, of North Central Neurology Associates in Cullman, Ala., and a study investigator. "These treatment satisfaction results are meaningful to clinicians and add important real-world insight to the established clinical trial evidence we already have for fingolimod."

A separate analysis of EPOC indicated that the overall incidence of infection was similar among patients taking Gilenya and patients taking standard injectable DMTs – consistent with results from previous studies.4 The analysis also found no observed relationship between lymphocyte counts and infection rates.4

"We led a revolution in MS treatment two years ago with the introduction of the first oral disease modifying therapy," said Dr. Timothy Wright , Global Head Development, Novartis Pharmaceuticals AG. "We are committed to continuing to provide critical insights to help physicians understand the role of Gilenya."

With more than two years on the market, Gilenya is approved in 72 countries and more than 63,000 patients worldwide have been treated with Gilenya.5 This includes both clinical trials and patients prescribed Gilenya.

About Gilenya

Gilenya is the first oral disease modifying therapy (DMT) approved to treat relapsing forms of MS6 and the first in a class of compounds called sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor (S1PR) modulators.6,7 The mechanism by which fingolimod exerts therapeutic effects in multiple sclerosis is unknown, but may involve reduction of lymphocyte migration into the central nervous system.6,7 In targeting the S1P receptor, initiation of treatment with Gilenya is known to be associated with bradycardia (slowing of the heart rate) and atrioventricular (AV) block (a problem with electrical impulse conduction in the heart).7,8

Gilenya is the only oral DMT for relapsing forms of MS with proven and consistent efficacy across two pivotal trials, including a head-to-head study (interferon beta-1a IM).9,10 In a two-year study, Gilenya reduced annualized relapse rate by 54 percent (p<0.001) when compared to placebo.10 In addition, Gilenya showed a 30 percent reduction in the risk of three-month confirmed disability progression (p=0.02, key secondary endpoint) compared to placebo.10 However, in a separate one-year study, there was no significant risk reduction of disability progression between Gilenya and interferon beta-1a IM. Gilenya reduced annualized relapse rate by 52 percent (p<0.001) compared to interferon beta-1a IM in a one-year study.9 A two-year pivotal clinical trial has shown that the majority of patients who started on Gilenya stayed on therapy compared to placebo (81.2 percent vs. 72.5 percent).10 Gilenya is licensed from Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation.

Indication

Gilenya is a prescription medicine used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in adults. Gilenya can decrease the number of MS flare-ups (relapses). Gilenya does not cure MS, but it can help slow down the physical problems that MS causes.

Important Safety Information

You should not take Gilenya if in the last 6 months you experienced heart attack, unstable angina, stroke or warning stroke, or certain types of heart failure. Do not take Gilenya if you have an irregular or abnormal heartbeat (arrhythmia) or if you take medicines that change your heart rhythm.

Gilenya may cause serious side effects such as:

  • Slow heart rate, especially after your first dose. A test to check the electrical activity of your heart (ECG) will be performed before and six hours after your first dose. Your pulse and blood pressure should be checked every hour while you stay in a medical facility during this time. If your heart rate slows down too much, you might feel dizzy or tired, or feel like your heart is beating slowly or skipping beats. Symptoms can happen up to 24 hours after your first dose. After 6 hours, if your ECG shows any heart problems or if your heart rate is still too low or continues to decrease, you will continue to be watched by a health care professional. If you have any serious side effects after your first dose, especially those that require treatment with other drugs, you will stay in a medical facility to be watched overnight and for at least 6 hours after your second dose of Gilenya the next day. If you experience slow heart rate, it will usually return to normal within 1 month. Call your doctor or go to the nearest emergency room right away if you have any symptoms of a slow heart rate. If you stop taking Gilenya for more than 14 days, you will need to repeat this observation.
  • Increased risk of serious infections. Gilenya lowers the number of white blood cells (lymphocytes) in your blood. This will usually go back to normal within 2 months of stopping Gilenya. Your doctor may do a blood test before you start Gilenya. Increased risk of infection was seen with doses higher than the approved dose (0.5 mg). Two patients died who took higher-dose Gilenya (1.25 mg) combined with high-dose steroids. Call your doctor right away if you have fever, tiredness, body aches, chills, nausea, or vomiting.
  • Macular edema, a vision problem that can cause some of the same vision symptoms as an MS attack (optic neuritis), or no symptoms. Macular edema usually starts in the first 3 to 4 months after starting Gilenya. Your doctor should test your vision before you start Gilenya; 3 to 4 months after you start Gilenya; and any time you notice vision changes. Vision problems may continue after macular edema has gone away. Your risk of macular edema may be higher if you have diabetes or have had an inflammation of your eye (uveitis). Call your doctor right away if you have blurriness, shadows, or a blind spot in the center of your vision; sensitivity to light; or unusually colored vision.
  • Breathing problems. Some patients have shortness of breath. Call your doctor right away if you have trouble breathing.
  • Liver problems. Your doctor should do blood tests to check your liver before you start Gilenya. Call your doctor right away if you have nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, tiredness, dark urine, or if your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow.
  • Increases in blood pressure (BP). BP should be monitored during treatment.

Gilenya may harm your unborn baby. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Women who can become pregnant should use effective birth control while on Gilenya, and for at least 2 months after stopping. If you become pregnant while taking Gilenya, or within 2 months after stopping, tell your doctor right away. Women who take Gilenya should not breastfeed, as it is not known if Gilenya passes into breast milk. A pregnancy registry is available for women who become pregnant during Gilenya treatment. Call 1-877-598-7237 or visit www.gilenyapregnancyregistry.com for more information.

Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions, including if you had or now have an irregular or abnormal heartbeat; history of stroke or warning stroke; heart problems; a history of fainting; a fever or infection, or if you are unable to fight infections; eye problems; diabetes; breathing or liver problems; or high blood pressure. Also tell your doctor if you have had chicken pox or have received the vaccine for chicken pox. Your doctor may do a test for the chicken pox virus, and you may need to get the vaccine for chicken pox and wait 1 month before starting Gilenya.

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including medicines for heart problems or high blood pressure or other medicines that may lower your heart rate or change your heart rhythm; medicines that could increase your chance of infections, such as medicines to treat cancer or control your immune system; or ketoconazole (an antifungal) by mouth. If taken with Gilenya, serious side effects may occur. You should not get certain vaccines while taking Gilenya, and for at least 2 months after stopping.

The most common side effects with Gilenya were headache, flu, diarrhea, back pain, abnormal liver tests, and cough.

You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Hair consultation - Lisa

For the longest while—like the past 15 years—I was trying to have Jennifer Aniston hair. I even did the Rachel cut while pregnant. My hair is my security blanket and I think it’s time I let go of that. I was thinking about a long bob but am waffling. Looking for suggestions from the hair guru! (Please excuse the non-makeup look but this was a now or never idea.)

The advice

Bill Angst says:

With only the one picture of you it is hard to give a finite opinion. My first impression is that your hair has to be moved off your face. I think your long locks are enviable and see no reason to cut them shorter.

I think that changing the colour on the other hand would be worthwhile dropping a few dollars for. I am really excited about this colour for you:

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley - Glamour Women of the Year Awards 2011

The the darker, deeper tones will offset the lighter tones and will frame your face beautifully.

The cut I feel best for you is a long, layered look that could be worn a couple ways:

Hilary Swank - BFI London Film Festival 2010

Please pay attention to the part on a diagonal and then straight back. This is is a great high forehead parting that tricks the eye.

I am sure that you would like a view of a shorter ‘do just for variety and curiosity. Casual…

Brooklyn Decker - ACM Awards 2011

PARIS, May 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

PLEASANTON, Kalifornien, May 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

     (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120425/527164 )

Integration in Cloud-Systeme gewährleistet ununterbrochene Inhaltskette

3 Must Have Herbs for Stress Reduction

3 Must Have Herbs for Stress Reduction
Are you mentally exhausted and feel as if you can’t face one more stress in life? A little natural therapy can go a long way in helping to reduce stress levels and anxiety. Here are 3 must-have herbs for reducing stress.

shankhpushpi 263x164 3 Must Have Herbs for Stress ReductionAre you mentally exhausted  and feel as if you can’t face one more stress in life? It’s becoming widely accepted that stress is a significant cause of illness and disease overall, so it’s important to manage this dilemma in any way possible. There are three Ayurvedic herbs that can greatly support the restoration of the central nervous system, adrenal glands, and brain so that you can face life’s challenges with ease and grace. We all face challenging times, and a little natural therapy can go a long way in helping to support us as we look head-on into the world.

Here are 3 must-have herbs for reducing stress.

1. Brahmi

Related to snapdragon and spinach, Brahmi is often called a brain tonic because it not only soothes a busy mind, but also supports greater concentration. Brahmi’s active ingredients are Bacoside A and Bacoside, which greatly support protein synthesis in the brain. As the cells of the brain are supported with these two elements, it can focus with more ease, and improve both long and short-term memory. Brahmi also helps to revitalize nerves, and thereby the neuro-communication that must happen in the brain. Neurons fire with more ease and diseases like depression and Alzheimer’s are even lessened. Just 300 mg once or twice a day can start to reduce a frazzled mind and restore nerves.

2. Shankhpushpi

This morning-glory-like herb is full of beneficial flavonoids and coumarins. These constituents of the herb help to promote a better memory and to improve the brain and central nervous system’s functioning. Memory functioning and stress reduction happen primarily due to the high level of antioxidants in the herb. Shankhpushpi also supports immunity, helps to lessen insomnia, and has both tranquilizing and brain stimulating effects without causing one to be jittery.

3. Jatamansi

Jatamansi, also known as Spikenard, is an herb used by Ayurvedic practitioners to support the mind in accepting challenges. An incredibly calming and herb that supports deep sleep, jatamansi grows in the Himalayan mountains primarily, as well as in Nepal. It’s effects are similar to those of Valerian root. It is also said to soothe many other psychological conditions, which are at the root of our stress. Try using the herb as an essential oil, using just a few drops rubbed into the wrists or neck. A non-fragrant massage oil can be very soothing to the mind and body.

Want more options? Here are another 4 herbs for anxiety and stress reduction.

How to Stay Safe at the Amusement Park

How to Stay Safe at the Amusement Park
May to September is prime time for fun at the amusement park. From frightening news reports to personal Youtube videos, there is no shortage of amusement-ride scares. But a new study has found that it's not always the biggest and fastest rides we should fear. Smaller ones, which parents might not consider as dangerous, contribute to injuries of more than 4,000 U.S. children each year.

Beneficial Oils for Your Health

If you listened to most doctors, you’d have to believe fish oils are fabulous. The problem with getting your essential fatty acids from fish oil is that you get more than you bargained for. If you listened to most doctors, you’d have to believe fish oils are fabulous. The problem with getting your essential fatty acids from fish oil is that you get more than you bargained for.

Many fish oils, especially those derived from fish livers, are contaminated with dioxins, mercury, organo-chloro pesticides, and PCBs.

These toxins can be removed by processing, but the processing results in damage to the essential fatty acids. Are the promises of fish just a false hope? Or is there a way to get the benefits of fish oil without fish?

Let’s start by taking a look at what it is in fish oil, and other oils, that provides the essential nutrition your body needs.

Essential fatty acids are substances from fats the body cannot make but must have for health. Essential fatty acids are found in two chemical families, n-3 and n-6. The body uses these fatty acids to make various kinds of regulatory hormones.

An n-3 fatty acid can’t be turned into an n-6 fatty acid, and an n-6 fatty acid never becomes n-3. Both kinds of fatty acids are necessary for normal function. The fatty acid expert Udo Erasmus says that the average of consumption of essential, n-3 fatty acids today is one-sixth what it was 150 years ago.

From 95 to 99% of the population of North America and Europe simply don’t get the essential fatty acids they need.

Are plant oils just as good as fish oils? Some important evidence is in.

A study in the British Journal of Nutrition published in October 2002 answered these three key questions:

* Can the human body convert a blend of plant oils into the DHA and EPA found in fish oil?
* If it can, how much of the plant oils is converted into the essential fatty acids found in fish oil?
* And is this enough for good health? In other words, can a vegan diet really provide essential fatty acids?

The answer seems to be yes to all three questions. A study of six female volunteers found that these women’s bodies converted about 36% of the ALA (the plant oil fatty acid) into the fatty acids found in fish oil.

A second study of six male volunteers found that these men’s bodies converted an average of 16% of the ALA from plants oils into the same essential fatty acids found in fish oil.

You don’t have to have fish oil to get the essential fatty acids your body needs, but plant oils offer you more than just essential fatty acids.

Almond oil is probably better known for its use in aromatherapy than for its use in the kitchen. The June 2005 edition of the journal Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine even reports that just touching the oil balances the immune system.

The result is that T cells fight infection without causing inflammation—an extremely important quality in treating any kind of long-term viral infection, HIV, herpes, and hepatitis among them. For uses in cooking, scientific evidence shows that almond oil increases satisfaction with fewer calories, especially in women.

Adding just a tiny amount of avocado oil to food helps the body absorb the carotenes and their chemical cousins: alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, and zeoxanthin among them. Add a teaspoon of avocado oil to carrots, pumpkin, or sweet potato dishes.

Avocado oil is not fattening (and neither are avocados). Recent clinical studies have even found that substituting avocado oil for other oils helps calorie restriction result in weight loss.

Black cumin seed oil protects the liver against environmental toxins, especially chemical compounds containing chlorine.

Borage seed oil is the richest source of the n-6 fatty acids. When there is advanced age, diabetes, high alcohol intake, eczema, cyclic mastitis, viral infections, excessive saturated fat intake, elevated cholesterol levels, and deficiencies of vitamin B6, zinc, magnesium, biotin, or calcium, supplementing the diet with borage seed oil helps balance the body’s pain relief and infection-fighting functions.

Up to a tablespoon a day may be helpful in cyclic breast pain, eczema, diabetic nerve damage, and rheumatoid arthritis. It’s always best to consume borage seed oil with other food.

The immunostimulant properties of cold-pressed coconut oil are well known. Cold-pressed coconut oil is a great source of caprylic acid, an antifungal agent the body produces on its own but that is easily supplemented with the oil.

If you must fry food, coconut oil is the most stable plant oil, the oil least likely to form harmful byproducts under high heat.

Evening primrose oil, also known as EPO, is perhaps the best-known supplement for fighting inflammation. One of the more interesting findings of recent research is preliminary evidence that EPO can help the repair of the enamel of the teeth.

The essential fatty acids in EPO help the body make hormones that relieve inflammation and stop a process leading to hormones that cause inflammation, making EPO helpful for persons who have eczema or arthritis.

Grapeseed oil is a great carrier for the essences used in aromatherapy. Used in cooking, grapeseed oil is an excellent source of the n-6 fatty acids the body needs to balance the n-3’s. Just use in moderation.

Using hempseed oil carries a slight risk of a false positive drug test for THC, especially if you consume more than 4 tablespoons a day. The health benefits of hempseed oil, however, are numerous.

Clinical studies from Finland published in April 2005 report that hempseed oil stops itchy skin (due to its content of n-3 and n-6 fatty acids, not due to any marijuana-like effect). Dozens of Chinese studies find that hempseed oil relieves intestinal inflammation.

Who doesn’t know about cooking with olive oil? Like other healthy oils, using olive oil can help lower triglycerides and control cholesterol. Olive oil, however, has some special effects. It contains chemicals that keep the white blood cells known as macrophages from “burrowing” into the walls of the arteries to remove oxidized cholesterol.

The “hardening” of the arteries is actually a process of calcifying the macrophages that get stuck in the linings of the arteries. The use of olive oil has been connected with relief (although not cure) of conditions as diverse as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and cancer.

Macadamia nut oil comes from Hawaii, and lowers cholesterol and triglycerides.  In women, it may even lower weight without increasing exercise or cutting calories.

Pumpkin seed oil is a terrific source of ALA. This oil is also is a source of some of cofactors of vitamin E that aren’t included in a vitamin E capsule.  The best-known use of pumpkin seed oil in alternative medicine is for the protection of the prostate, although it is useful in treating bladder problems and supporting sexual health in both men and women.

Use pumpkin seed oil in your shakes, smoothies, or salad dressings. Two bits of advice, however: Keep your pumpkin seed oil in the refrigerator, and, of course, never heat it.

Safflower oil made through commercial refining, bleaching, and deodorizing processes has detrimental effect on red blood cells. As many as one million red blood cells are destroyed when you consume even one tablespoon of the common, commercial product.

Cold-pressed safflower oil, on the other hand, is an excellent source of linoleic acid, and unlike many other oils, it produces particles that are very rapidly cleared from the bloodstream. Any effect of safflower oil on lipid levels is very brief.

Consuming sesame seed oil provides the body with a chemical cousin of vitamin E known as gamma-tocopherol. According to a presenter sponsored by the American Heart Association, cooking with sesame oil in place of other edible oils appears to help reduce high blood pressure and lower the amount of medication needed to control hypertension.

In a clinical study, using sesame oil as the sole cooking oil for 60 days along with drug treatment lowered patients’ blood pressure levels. By the end of the study, simply using sesame oil allowed doctors to reduce the dosage of high blood pressure medicine by 2/3

Soybean oil is a source of beta-sitosterol. A well-documented treatment for prostate disease, beta-sitosterol also promotes recovery of the immune system after endurance exercise (such as a race, a “big game,” or over-training).

Sunflower oil is a source of vitamins A, D, and E, important for bone, liver, and skin. The July 2005 edition of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association reports that a diet rich in sunflower oil lowers LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and the clotting factors that predispose to heart attack and stroke.

Wheat germ oil
is rich in fat but also in phytosterols. The two components of the oil together, however, block the absorption of cholesterol from food. Wheat germ oil is also a terrific source of vitamins E and K. Be sure to protect your wheat germ oil from heat and keep its container tightly closed.

Stomach Ache Remedies – 5 Natural Solutions for Upset Stomach

stomach ache 263x164 Stomach Ache Remedies 5 Natural Solutions for Upset StomachIt should come as no surprise that in times without pink Pepto Bismol or fizzy Alka Seltzer, there indeed were natural stomach ache remedies, whether the cause be from poor digestion, lack of proper digestive enzymes, or eating a questionable meal. There can be many underlying reasons for a belly ache, including a hiatal hernia and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), but don’t worry – there are natural remedies for these discomforts.

Here are 5 natural stomach ache remedies to replace your pharmaceutical solutions.

5 Natural Stomach Ache Remedies

  • 1. Fennel Seeds – These seeds have been used by numerous cultures for centuries to aid digestion and prevent bloating and gas. They are rich in magnesium, and also act as an antacid and breathe freshener. They also stimulate bile production in the liver, so you can start to rid the body of any unwanted fats in the meals you consume.
  • 2. Peppermint Oil Belly Rub – As said by some people on EarthClinic, peppermint oil can ease bowel spasms, as well as refresh a tired mind (which often happens after over-eating). Mentha Peperita (another name for peppermint) is also full of vitamins A and C, offers Omega 3 fatty acids, and contains potassium, manganese, iron, magnesium, copper, and calcium.
