Whitby to host 4th annual "The Walk to Fight Familial Ataxias" on Saturday, September, 22nd , 2012.
WHITBY, ON, Sept. 20, 2012 /CNW/ - On September 22nd, the Town of Whitby (Ontario) is set to host the 4th annual The Walk to Fight Familial Ataxias at Heydenshore Park. The Walk to Fight Familial Ataxias will also be held in: Richmond (BC), Montreal (Quebec), and Saskatoon (Saskatchewan) on or around the same date. Our combined goal is to raise both research funds and create Canadian awareness about Ataxias
Background: Familial ataxias are various genetic illnesses affecting the nervous system. In addition to a variety of symptoms and handicaps, sufferers have difficulty coordinating voluntary movements. These illnesses are progressive and lead to a progressive loss of physical abilities, often until they are completely disabled. Familial ataxias can present themselves at any age and at this time, there is no cure.
Dr. Mark Tarnopolsky from McMaster University Medical Centre or Dr. Teesta Soman from Toronto Sick Kids Hospital kindly agreed to give a personal interview and answer questions about Ataxias.
