According to a University of Michigan Medical Center study, seven out of 10 women are unaware of their breast reconstruction options after a breast cancer diagnosis; the Bougainvillea Clinique and Hartog hope to change that.
Hartog is a pioneer in the field of breast reconstruction, using fat grafting as an alternative to traditional breast reconstruction. It requires no hospitalization, is virtually scarless and is 100 percent natural, without adding breast implants.
"Breast cancer affects so many women and families, including mine," said Hartog.
Hartog's wife, Michelle, is a breast cancer survivor. Michelle had one breast removed and then opted for a double mastectomy. She opted to have her breasts reconstructed via fat grafting instead of inserting silicone and saline implants into her body. Her breasts look and feel natural. Patients who have undergone the breast reconstruction with fat grafting also have continued skin sensation, which is not the norm with traditional implants.
"I love advocating with my wife because it gives me the ability to speak to these women on a personal level," Hartog explained. "Michelle has been there, and we empathize with the difficult choices breast cancer forces women to make."
Since Michelle's procedure, Hartog has dedicated himself and his practice to using his education, influence and experience to help women learn about treatment options.
In 2012, the Bougainvillea Clinique used creativity to educate women about breast reconstruction options for National Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day struck a chord with many. The concept, created by FEED a healthcare brand advertising agency, captured the attention of women. The graphic won a San Diego American Marketer of the Year award in the Cause Marketing category at the 2013 San Diego chapter of the American Marketing Association awards ceremony. National BRA Day 2012 was October 17.
Hartog discusses breast reconstruction options available to women through seminars, women's support groups and international education projects.
The Bougainvillea Clinique is the only clinic in Central Florida using the FDA-approved fat-targeting, liquefying technology called HydraSolve Lipoplasty System from Andrew Technologies, and is participating in an FDA study utilizing fat grafting with a breast enlargement device.
