Antibiotics For Acne Treatment

If you are suffering from moderate to cystic and severe acne, your doctors may prescribe a combination of topical creams and oral antibiotics. The most common oral antibiotics for acne treatment are tetracycline, minocycline, doxycycline and erythromycin. They are only available with a prescription, and not over-the-counter.

About two million Americans are plagued by severe acne every year which warrants the administration of antibiotics. The whole course usually take several months to complete. This has raised some concerns about its long-term use.

In one study, it was observed that acne sufferers who were taking antibiotics for treating acne were more likely to develop a URTI than those who were using other non-antibiotic ance remedies.

It is also noted that there may be an increased susceptibility to infections if you use antibiotics for a long time.
