ACPE Announces Support for IOM Call for Improved Use of Data and Technology in Health Care

TAMPA, Fla., Sept. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The American College of Physician Executives (ACPE), which represents nearly 11,000 high-level physician leaders in all types of health care organizations across the U.S., today announced its support for the Institute of Medicine's new study, Best Care at Lower Cost: The Path to Continuously Learning Health Care in America.

The 382-page report offers recommendations from a panel of experts for making health care more adaptive to change, improving access to information for patients and their families, and creating more equitable care. These changes would be made through the improved use of health information technology, as well as creating new payment models and re-engineering health care systems.

"The current climate of excessive costs and unreliable outcomes is unacceptable," said Dr. Peter Angood, ACPE's CEO. "As the IOM study illustrates, we must make better use of technology in order to make health care more responsive, accessible and reliable for everyone."

As an organization devoted to improving health care through the empowerment of physician leaders, ACPE has already embraced many of the ideas described in Best Care at Lower Cost. The study correlates well with the nine essential elements ACPE believes must be part of the future of health care in America. ACPE believes any reform efforts must be:

  • Quality-centered
  • Safe for all
  • Streamlined and efficient
  • Measurement-based
  • Evidence based
  • Value-driven
  • Innovative
  • Fair and equitable
  • Physician-led

ACPE applauded the efforts of the IOM in creating this well-reasoned and forward-thinking study and offered to assist in any way possible to transform its important ideas into reality.
