Don’t Fear the Vegan: A Family Christmas [Giveaway]

Don’t Fear the Vegan: A Family Christmas [Giveaway]
We at DFV want to share our family tradition with our loyal readers. We’ve lined up a bunch of great presents for some of our lucky readers during our 12 Days of Christmas Celebration. We have food, t-shirts, swag and other vegan goodies to give away courtesy of some pretty cool companies, large and small with a couple of DFV goodies in there too

For as long as Steffi and I have been together we have celebrated our own version of the 12 days of Christmas.  We traded small gifts between ourselves, then when the little vegan was born the focus shifted to her.  Every year starting on the 14th she receives a little something everyday until Christmas when Santa Clause delivers her a ‘big’ gift.

After all these years I had forgotten how we started doing this.  I assumed it was something the wife had picked up from her family. Now that I think about it, that’s a pretty dumb assumption ‘cause I’ve never noticed anybody else in the family doing it.  So where did it come from?

In the early days of our relationship I was sort of a Scrooge.  Aside from having my son every other year, as a single guy living far from my family I really didn’t have much to look forward to during the holidays. Yeah, there was the usual round of holiday parties, but they really didn’t look that different than the parties I usually attended, except that the decorations were different.   Now don’t feel sad, I was living in L.A. and had a lot of Hebrew friends so there was plenty to do on Christmas day that had absolutely nothing to do with Christmas, and I was happy that way.

Well this way of thinkin’ is at odds with the wife’s view of holidays.  She loves holidays, Halloween, Easter and the other biggies.  You should see her at the fireworks stand on the 4th of July.  Every year your passionate animal rights crusader becomes Steffi the Destroyer, demanding bigger, brighter, louder and just MORE explosions.  Seriously the fireworks budget has escalated every year we’ve lived here, where they are legal.

We all know which day is the biggest of the big, the most hyped of them all, and she was determined to make me love Hannuchristmakwanzakah.  She started giving me small gifts in the days leading up to the main event and over the course of a couple of years it won me over and now I love the holidays.
