NEW ORLEANS, March 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Safe in Common, a non-profit organization of healthcare safety advocates, today announced it will take part in the 59th Annual Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Congress as part of the organization's nationwide campaign to raise awareness of needlestick safety among healthcare personnel and encourage them to take a needlestick safety pledge at www.safeincommon.org/pledge

As part of the Needlestick Safety Advocacy Tour (NSAT) Safe in Common will visit U.S. hospitals and healthcare conferences throughout the nation, including as an exhibitor at AORN, held March 24-29 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, 900 Convention Center Blvd., New Orleans, LA, booth #5825.

"Safe in Common supports AORN's vision as an advocate for excellence in perioperative practice and healthcare. Our organizations are aligned in our commitment to sharps safety and to create a safer working environment both inside and outside the operating room," said Dr. Mary Foley, Chairperson of Safe in Common. "All safety-engineered devices are not created equally. We want healthcare personnel to have access to the safest, simplest devices for every procedure."

"Needlestick and sharps injuries are still common place. Change can only occur through a commitment to education, advocacy, innovation and collaboration. Safe In Common's mission is to improve awareness and strengthen federal standards for needlestick prevention, and to educate healthcare personnel regarding devices that can better protect those at risk for harm," Foley said.

During the AORN 2012 Congress, Safe in Common will engage with healthcare personnel to listen to their concerns regarding needlestick safety, record their stories, and unite with them to help create a working environment that is free from the risk of needlestick injuries.
